At 10kVA, “same size” can mean very different machines. A Felicity transformer unit, a Felicity single-phase hybrid and a Deye or Growatt three-phase hybrid may all say “10” on the box. Before you compare prices, check three things: single-phase or three-phase, battery voltage, and whether the solar charger is built in.
Should I buy a hybrid or non-hybrid 10kVA inverter?
A hybrid 10kVA has the MPPT solar charger built in. It takes panels, batteries, grid and generator in one unit, and most have Wi-Fi monitoring. A non-hybrid (inverter/charger) such as the Felicity IVPS transformer type is tough and handles motor loads well. But for solar you must add one or two separate MPPT controllers.
| Hybrid 10kVA | Non-hybrid 10kVA | |
|---|---|---|
| Inverter price | About ₦880,000 – ₦2,200,000+ | About ₦500,000 – ₦950,000 |
| Solar charging | Built in, often two MPPTs | Separate controller(s) needed |
| Lithium communication | Usually yes | Often limited |
| Surge handling | Good on most models | Very good on transformer types |
| Best for | New solar installs | Heavy motor loads, or adding to an existing controller setup |
A non-hybrid can look cheaper, but at 10kVA you may need ₦300,000 or more of MPPT controllers to handle the panels. Compare prices in our charge controller guide before deciding.
What can a 10kVA inverter carry?
Multiply kVA by a power factor of about 0.8: 10,000VA × 0.8 = 8,000 W. Installers advise keeping steady load to about 70% of the rating, so plan on 5,500–7,000 W of everyday load and leave the rest for start-up surges.
| Appliance | Approx. running watts |
|---|---|
| 2 × 1.5hp split ACs (inverter type) | 2,200 – 2,800 W |
| Double-door fridge + chest freezer | 300 – 450 W |
| 2 TVs + decoders | 250 – 300 W |
| 25 LED bulbs | 250 W |
| 5 fans | 350 W |
| Laptops, router, CCTV | 250 W |
| 1hp pumping machine | 750 W running, 2–3× at start |
| Microwave (short use) | 1,000 – 1,200 W |
Worked example (a 4-bedroom duplex in Abuja): 2 ACs (2,500 W) + fridge and freezer (400 W) + TVs (300 W) + lights (250 W) + fans (350 W) + laptops and CCTV (250 W) = 4,050 W. Add the pumping machine (750 W) and you reach 4,800 W, still inside the 5,500–7,000 W comfort zone. A third AC or an electric cooker on top of that is where you need to stagger loads.
If your building has three-phase supply and big loads on each phase, ask your installer about a three-phase 10kW model. A single-phase 10kVA can only back up the circuits wired to it.
What battery voltage and how many batteries does a 10kVA inverter need?
Modern 10kVA hybrids are 48V (some say 51.2V for lithium). At 8,000 W, a 48V inverter pulls about 167 A (8,000 ÷ 48) from the battery. That needs thick cables, good lugs and a proper DC breaker. Older transformer models avoid this by using 120V, 180V or 192V banks, but then you need 10–16 batteries.
| Battery bank | Usable energy | Backup at 1,500 W night load | Approx. cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 × 12V 220Ah tubular (48V, 2 strings) | About 10.5kWh (50% of 21kWh) | About 7 hours | About ₦2,700,000 |
| 48V 10kWh lithium | About 9kWh (90%) | About 6 hours | ₦1,650,000 – ₦2,650,000 |
| 48V 15kWh lithium | About 13.5kWh | About 9 hours | ₦2,300,000 – ₦3,100,000 |
| 48V 20kWh lithium (2 × 10kWh) | About 18kWh | About 12 hours | ₦3,300,000 – ₦5,300,000 |
Four tubular batteries (about 5kWh usable) are too small for a 10kVA. They will be drained in a few hours and wear out early. For this size, lithium is now the usual choice, with 15kWh a good middle ground. See our solar battery price guide and our OPzS and OPzV battery guide for long-life lead options.
How many solar panels does a 10kVA inverter need?
Most 10kVA installs use 10–14 panels of 550W (5.5–7.7kW). On a clear day with about 4.5 sun hours, 12 × 550W makes roughly 6,600 W × 4.5 h ≈ 29.7kWh before losses, or about 22–24kWh after. That is enough to run daytime loads and refill a 15kWh battery. Listings on Jiji for complete 10kVA systems typically pair the inverter with 12 × 500W or 14 × 600W panels.
You need roof space for this: each 550W panel is about 2.3m × 1.1m, so 12 panels need roughly 30m² of clear, south-facing roof. At about ₦120,000–₦200,000 per 550W panel, the array costs ₦1,200,000–₦2,800,000. See current solar panel prices and our installation guide.
How much is a complete 10kVA solar system in Nigeria?
| Setup | What’s included | Typical total |
|---|---|---|
| Mid-range (Felicity-type hybrid) | 10kVA 48V hybrid + 10kWh lithium + 12 × 500W panels | About ₦4,800,000 |
| Mid-range, bigger battery | 10kVA hybrid + 15kWh lithium + 10 × 550W panels | About ₦5,000,000 – ₦7,000,000 |
| Premium (Deye) | Deye 10kW + 15–20kWh lithium + panels, installed | About ₦6,400,000 – ₦10,100,000 |
| Premium (Victron) | Victron MultiPlus-II + MPPT + lithium + panels, installed | About ₦7,900,000 – ₦12,300,000 |
Quotes differ most on cabling, breakers, surge protection, mounting and labour. A 10kVA job also often needs a changeover to separate essential and non-essential circuits. Always ask for an itemised quote. For how these totals compare with smaller sizes, see how much a complete solar system costs in Nigeria.
Against a generator: a 10kVA diesel or petrol set running 8 hours a day burns roughly 20–24 litres a day. At about ₦1,000 per litre, that is ₦600,000 or more a month, plus servicing and noise. Pump prices vary by city, so use what you pay. That is why many businesses on Band A or B tariffs now find a 10kVA solar setup pays back in a few years.
Is 10kVA too big for my house?
If you run only one AC and no heavy pump, a 5kVA inverter will save you ₦2–3 million on the full system. For a flat with just lights, fans, TV and a fridge, a 3.5kVA inverter is enough. 10kVA makes sense for 2–3 ACs, a borehole, a big freezer, or a business. How do you spot a fake 10kVA inverter?
- Check the serial number with the brand: photograph the serial on the unit and box, then confirm it with the brand’s Nigerian office or website before you pay. “London-used” or refurbished units often have mismatched or scratched-off serials.
- Buy from an authorised dealer: ask the brand which dealers in your city are authorised, especially for Deye, Growatt and Victron, which are widely copied.
- Insist on a warranty card: it should carry the serial number, date of purchase and the dealer’s stamp. No card usually means no warranty.
- Be wary of prices far below the market: a “new” 48V hybrid 10kVA offered well under about ₦750,000 is likely used, refurbished or fake.
Frequently asked questions
How many ACs can a 10kVA inverter carry?
Two to three inverter-type 1.5hp ACs, along with normal household loads. Running all three through the night needs about 15–20kWh of battery.
How many batteries does a 10kVA inverter take?
For a 48V model: four 12V batteries per string (eight for a sensible bank), or one or two 48V lithium packs. Older 180V–192V models need 15–16 × 12V batteries.
Can a 10kVA inverter run a borehole pump?
Yes, a 1–1.5hp pump runs comfortably. Start it when big loads like ACs are off, and ideally when the sun is up.
Is 10kVA single-phase or three-phase?
Both exist. Most home 10kVA units (Felicity, Yohako, Victron) are single-phase. Models like the Deye SUN-10K-SG04LP3 and Growatt SPH 10000TL3 are three-phase. Match the inverter to your building’s supply.
