Tesla’s Solar Roof typically cost about $100,000–$125,000 for an average US home in 2025–2026, roughly three times the cost of a new asphalt roof plus standard solar panels (about $30,000–$45,000). As of August 2026, Tesla has reportedly stopped taking new Solar Roof orders. If you were shopping for solar shingles, here is what changed, what existing owners keep, and what to buy instead.
Quick answer
- Availability: Electrek reported on Aug. 20, 2026 that installers were told Solar Roof tiles can no longer be ordered. Tesla has not made a formal public announcement.
- Typical cost: about $100,000–$125,000 for an average home, based on reported quotes. Some quotes went far higher.
- Cheaper option: a new asphalt roof plus a 7 kW panel system costs about $30,000–$45,000.
- Existing owners: warranties on installed roofs are reported to remain in force.
- Tax credit: the 30% federal homeowner credit ended for systems placed in service after Dec. 31, 2025.
Is the Tesla Solar Roof still available in 2026?
For new buyers, the answer is very likely no. On August 20, 2026, Electrek reported that Tesla told installers the Solar Roof tiles could no longer be ordered. Reporting from BGR, The Verge and others followed. The Solar Roof page on Tesla’s website now sends visitors to its solar panel page, and the product no longer appears in the Energy menu.
Tesla has not issued a formal press release. So treat this as “no longer sold” rather than an official end date. If you have a signed contract that has not been installed yet, contact Tesla directly and get the status in writing.
The product had been fading for a while. Tesla stopped publishing solar deployment numbers after early 2024. Reports put total Solar Roof installs at only about 3,000 homes since launch. That is far below early promises of 1,000 roofs per week.
How much did a Tesla Solar Roof cost?
Tesla priced each roof by its size, complexity and the number of active (power-making) tiles. Real-world quotes reported in 2026 averaged around $106,000. Many landed between $100,000 and $125,000, and some complex roofs were quoted near $200,000. A Powerwall battery was required with every Solar Roof, which added to the bill.
Pricing was also unstable. In 2021, Tesla raised prices on many signed contracts, in some cases close to double. Tesla settled a related class action for $6 million in 2023.
Tesla Solar Roof vs solar panels plus a new roof: which costs less?
A Solar Roof replaces your whole roof. So the fair comparison is a new conventional roof plus standard panels. Here is the math for an average home with a 7 kW system.
- Solar panels: 7,000 W × about $2.62/W ≈ $18,340 installed (EnergySage, June 2026). See our solar panel cost guide.
- New asphalt roof: about $12,000–$25,000 for a typical home (our estimate; local quotes vary a lot).
- Total: $18,340 + $12,000 = $30,340 on the low end; $18,340 + $25,000 = $43,340 on the high end.
- Solar Roof premium: $106,000 − $43,340 ≈ $62,660 more, even against the high-end panel option.
Both options can produce similar energy if sized the same. At the US average of about 1,350 kWh per kW per year, a 7 kW system makes 7 kW × 1,350 kWh = 9,450 kWh a year. At 18.2¢/kWh, that is 9,450 × $0.182 ≈ $1,720 of electricity a year. The extra $62,660 for a Solar Roof would take 62,660 ÷ 1,720 ≈ 36 years to earn back from power savings alone.
| Option | Typical installed cost | Battery | Still sold? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tesla Solar Roof | About $100,000–$125,000 | Powerwall required | No new orders (reported Aug. 2026) |
| Asphalt roof + 7 kW panels | About $30,000–$45,000 | Optional | Yes |
| Asphalt roof + 7 kW panels + one 13.5 kWh battery | About $46,000–$59,000 | Included | Yes |
The battery row adds about $15,600 for a 13.5 kWh home battery (EnergySage, July 2026). For Powerwall-specific numbers, see Tesla Powerwall cost.
What are the pros and cons of Tesla solar shingles?
Pros
- Looks: the glass tiles blend in. Many people can’t tell it’s a solar roof.
- Roof and solar in one: one project, one contractor, one warranty.
- Durable glass: Tesla rated the tiles for high wind and hail.
Cons
- Price: roughly 2.5–3.5 times a roof plus panels.
- No longer sold: new orders reportedly ended in August 2026.
- Repair risk: replacement tiles and trained crews may get harder to find over time.
- Lower output per square foot: roof tiles are less efficient than modern 400 W panels, so you need more roof area for the same kW.
- Long, uncertain timelines: many buyers reported long waits and price changes before install.
What happens to the Tesla Solar Roof warranty now?
Warranties on roofs already installed are reported to remain in force. Tesla’s Solar Roof warranty has covered the tiles, power output and weatherproofing for 25 years, and it transfers to a new owner if you sell the home. Tesla published an updated US warranty effective May 7, 2026.
A warranty is only as useful as the service behind it. If you own a Solar Roof, do three things now:
- Download your warranty and contract from your Tesla account and save copies.
- Check the system’s output monthly in the Tesla app, so you spot problems early.
- Ask your homeowner’s insurance company how it would handle storm damage to solar tiles.
What should you buy instead of a Tesla Solar Roof?
For most homes, standard panels are the best value. If your roof needs replacing within about 5–10 years, replace it first, then add panels. That avoids paying to remove and reinstall the panels later.
- Standard panels: Tesla itself now sells its own panels (TSP-415 and TSP-420), which it says are built at its Buffalo, New York factory. Brands like Qcells also build panels in the US. See our Qcells solar panels review and US solar panel manufacturers list.
- All-black panels: if looks matter, all-black panels with black frames sit low and look clean on dark roofs.
- Other solar shingles: companies such as GAF Energy and SunStyle have offered solar roofing products. Availability varies by region, so confirm a local certified installer before you commit.
Who did a Tesla Solar Roof make sense for?
It fit a narrow buyer. That was someone who needed a new roof anyway, cared strongly about looks, had a large budget, and planned to stay in the home for decades. HOA rules that limit visible panels also pushed some buyers toward it.
For everyone else, the numbers never worked well. That gap has grown since the federal 30% credit for homeowners ended for systems placed in service after Dec. 31, 2025. Read solar rebates and tax credits in 2026 to see what incentives are left in your state.
Do you need a battery with solar shingles or panels?
Tesla required a Powerwall with every Solar Roof. With standard panels, a battery is optional. It makes the most sense if you get frequent outages or your utility pays little for exported power, as under California’s net billing. Our solar batteries guide explains sizing and cost.
A quick example: one 13.5 kWh battery at about $15,600 installed works out to $15,600 ÷ 13.5 kWh ≈ $1,156 per kWh of storage. Tesla’s own pricing has run lower, at about $967 per kWh.
Frequently asked questions
Did Tesla discontinue the Solar Roof?
Tesla reportedly stopped taking new Solar Roof orders in August 2026, according to Electrek and other outlets. Tesla has not made a formal announcement, but the product no longer appears on its website.
How much is a Tesla Solar Roof per square foot?
Reported 2026 quotes worked out to around $60 per sq ft of roof, including the required Powerwall. That compares with Tesla’s original 2016 target of about $22 per sq ft.
Will Tesla still service my Solar Roof?
Warranties on installed systems are reported to remain in force. Keep your paperwork and contact Tesla support for any problem.
Are solar shingles better than solar panels?
They look better but cost far more and make less power per square foot. For most homeowners, a new roof plus panels gives more energy for less money.
