A solar bulb in Nigeria costs about ₦6,500 to ₦15,000 for a single rechargeable bulb with its own small panel, and about ₦23,000 to ₦35,000 for a three-bulb solar lighting kit (prices seen on Jumia and Jiji in October 2026). A plain rechargeable emergency bulb with no panel costs ₦7,000 to ₦12,000. Prices move with the naira exchange rate, so treat these as ranges, not fixed figures.

Quick answer

  • Rechargeable emergency bulb (no panel): about ₦7,000–₦12,000.
  • Solar bulb with its own small panel: about ₦6,500–₦15,000 per bulb; two-packs from about ₦18,000.
  • Three-bulb solar lighting kit: about ₦23,000–₦35,000, usually with USB phone charging.
  • Real runtime: 3–8 hours a night for most bulbs; the “38W” or “100W” on the box is not the real power draw.
  • Brands seen in Nigeria: DP, Lontor, Mythco and many unbranded kits; Sun King sells solar home kits with bulbs.

This guide is about bulbs you hang or fix inside the house: the parlour, bedrooms, kitchen and corridor. If you want lights for your gate, compound or estate road, see our solar street light price guide instead. If you need a light you can carry around, read our rechargeable torch light price guide.

What is a solar bulb, and how is it different from a rechargeable bulb?

Both types have a small lithium battery inside the bulb. The difference is how you charge them.

  • Rechargeable emergency bulb: screws into a normal B22 or E27 holder. When NEPA is on, the bulb lights and charges. When light goes, it keeps shining from its battery. Some models, like the DP emergency bulbs, also have a hook so you can unscrew and hang them.
  • Solar bulb with panel: comes with a small solar panel and a cable of a few metres. You put the panel on the roof or a window ledge and run the cable inside. The bulb charges in the day and lights at night, with no NEPA needed.
  • Solar lighting kit: a small box with a battery, a panel and two to four bulbs on long cables. Most also have USB ports for phones and sometimes a radio.

If you live in a Band D or Band E area where NEPA gives you only a few hours a day, the solar version is the safer buy. An emergency bulb that never gets a full charge will not last the night.

How much is a solar bulb in Nigeria in 2026?

We checked listings on Jumia, Jiji and Slot in October 2026. The table shows what sellers were asking.

ProductWhat you getPrice seen (Oct 2026)
DP 9W portable rechargeable bulb (DP-7817)4,000mAh lithium battery, no panelabout ₦7,000 (Jiji)

Generic “18W” solar bulb with panelBulb, small panel, cableabout ₦9,700–₦9,800 (Jumia)
DP rechargeable bulb with solar panel4,000mAh battery, panel, cableabout ₦15,000 (Jumia and Jiji)
Mythco portable solar bulb, 2-packTwo bulbs, 850mAh each, panelabout ₦18,000 (Jiji)
Three-bulb solar lighting kitBattery box, panel, 3 bulbs, USB portsabout ₦23,000–₦35,000 (Jiji and Jumia)
Asking prices seen on Jumia, Jiji and Slot in October 2026. Prices change with the naira exchange rate and between sellers.

Many Jumia listings show a big “was” price with a 30–80% discount. Judge a bulb on the price you will pay today, not on the crossed-out number.

Why do cheap solar bulbs say 38W, 100W or even 3000W?

The watt figure on most solar bulb boxes is a marketing number, not the real power draw. You can check this with simple maths.

A 4,000mAh lithium battery at 3.7V stores about:

  • 4,000mAh ÷ 1,000 = 4Ah
  • 4Ah × 3.7V = 14.8Wh of energy

If the bulb truly used 38W, it would empty that battery in 14.8 ÷ 38 = 0.39 hours, about 23 minutes. Sellers say these bulbs last for hours, so the real draw must be much lower, probably 2–5W. That is fine for a room. Just compare bulbs by battery size (mAh) and lumens, not by the big watt number.

How many lumens do you need for a room?

Lumens tell you how bright a bulb is. A good LED gives roughly 80–100 lumens per real watt. As a rough guide:

SpaceLumens that feel rightReal LED watts (approx.)
Corridor, toilet, store150–300 lm2–3W
Bedroom300–500 lm3–5W
Parlour or kitchen500–800 lm5–8W
Shop or reading table800 lm and above8–10W
Our estimates, based on typical LED efficiency of 80–100 lumens per watt.

The Mythco solar bulb on Jiji, for example, lists 350 lumens. That is enough for a bedroom but dim for a large parlour.

How long does a solar bulb last at night?

Runtime depends on battery size and how bright you set the bulb. Use this formula:

Hours = battery Wh ÷ real watts, then knock off about 15% for losses.

  • 4,000mAh bulb (14.8Wh) at 3W: 14.8 ÷ 3 = 4.9 hours, × 0.85 = about 4 hours.
  • Same bulb on a 1.5W low mode: 14.8 ÷ 1.5 = 9.9 hours, × 0.85 = about 8 hours.
  • 850mAh Mythco bulb (850 ÷ 1,000 × 3.7 = 3.1Wh): the seller claims 5–8 hours, which only works on a low setting of under 0.6W.

So a single bulb on full brightness will rarely last from 7pm to 6am. If you need light all night, use the low or night mode, or buy a kit with a bigger battery box.

Can the small panel charge the bulb in one day?

Usually yes in dry season, and often no in heavy rainy season. Most Nigerian cities get around 4–5 good sun hours a day. Here is the maths for a panel of about 5W:

  • 5W × 4.5 sun hours = 22.5Wh
  • 22.5Wh × 0.7 (charging and heat losses) = about 15.8Wh

That just about fills a 14.8Wh battery. Many cheap kits do not state the panel wattage at all, and some panels are 2–3W. Those will only half-charge the bulb on a cloudy day in Lagos or Port Harcourt. Put the panel where nothing shades it from about 9am to 4pm, and wipe off dust every few weeks.

How many years will a solar bulb last?

The LED itself can run for many thousands of hours. The battery is what wears out first. Small lithium cells in these bulbs are often rated for a few hundred full cycles. Lontor, for example, rates one of its lamp batteries at over 340 cycles.

If you drain and recharge the bulb every night, 340 cycles is about 11 months (340 ÷ 30 days). After that the bulb still works, but for fewer hours. Expect a cheap bulb to give good service for one to two years. A kit with a separate battery box can last longer, because the battery is bigger and works less hard each night.

Which solar bulb brands are sold in Nigeria?

  • DP (DP LED Light): the most common name on Jumia and Jiji. Sells emergency bulbs with 4,000mAh batteries, with or without a panel. Model numbers like DP-7813T and DP-7817 help you check you are getting the right one.
  • Lontor: long-standing name for rechargeable lamps in Nigeria. Its CTL-EB058 emergency bulb was listed on Jiji at about ₦9,500.
  • Mythco: sells portable solar bulbs in pairs with a shared panel.
  • Sun King: sells solar home kits with several bulbs, a battery and a panel, often on pay-as-you-go. See our Sun King solar price guide.
  • Unbranded kits: sold as “solar lighting system with 3 bulbs” on Jiji and Jumia. Some are fine, but most do not state panel size or battery capacity. Ask the seller before you pay.

What should you check before you buy a solar bulb?

  1. Battery size in mAh. Aim for 2,000mAh or more for a bedroom bulb and 4,000mAh for a parlour.
  2. Panel wattage. If the listing does not say, ask. A tiny panel means a half-charged bulb.
  3. Cable length. You need enough cable to reach from the roof or window to the room, usually 3–5 metres.
  4. Brightness modes. A low or night mode doubles your runtime.
  5. Holder type. Most Nigerian homes use B22 (pin) holders. Check before you buy a screw-in E27 bulb.
  6. Where you buy. Computer Village and Alaba have good prices, but fakes with smaller batteries than stated are common. Test the bulb in the shop, and keep your receipt.

Is a solar bulb cheaper than lighting from a generator?

For light alone, yes. Running even a small petrol generator just to light a few rooms burns fuel every night. A ₦15,000 solar bulb has no running cost after you buy it. Four bulbs at about ₦60,000 in total can light a small flat for one to two years before the batteries start to fade.

Once you also want fans, TV and phone charging, single bulbs stop making sense. A solar generator or a full home solar system powers ordinary AC bulbs, like our LED wall bracket light, along with everything else. Use our solar load calculator to size one. For cooling during outages, see our rechargeable fan price guide.

What about lighting outside the house?

Indoor solar bulbs are not built for rain. For your gate, fence or compound, use a waterproof outdoor light. See our solar flood light, or read the solar street light price guide for pole-mounted lights.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a DP solar bulb in Nigeria?

In October 2026, DP rechargeable bulbs were listed at about ₦7,000 for the 9W model and about ₦12,000 for the “38W” model. The DP bulb sold with a solar panel was about ₦15,000.

Can a solar bulb work during the rainy season?

Yes, but it will charge less. On a heavy cloudy day, expect perhaps half the usual runtime. Use the low mode, or top up from NEPA if your bulb also has a USB charging port.

Can I replace the battery in a solar bulb?

On most cheap sealed bulbs, no. Kits with a separate battery box are easier to repair. A phone or electronics technician can sometimes change the cell in larger bulbs.

Is a solar bulb or a rechargeable torch better during a blackout?

A solar bulb lights the whole room from a fixed spot. A torch or lantern is better for moving around and going outside. Many homes keep both. See our rechargeable torch light guide.
